Drafted in the first-round of the 1989 amateur baseball draft by the Seattle Mariners but chose to attend UConn. Selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 1990 draft and pitched in their minor league system in three summers. Selected by Charlotte Hornets in 1st round (#20 pick overall) of 1993 NBA Draft. Thus he became the only person ever to be a 1st round draft pick in two sports. Finished third in '94-95 NBA Long Distance Shootout at All-Star Weekend. Traded to Golden State Warriors for Donald Royal on Feb. 20 1997. Traded from the Golden State to the Chicago Bulls for Dickey Simpkins on Sept. 22, 1997. Earned an NBA Chamiponship ring with the Bulls in the '97-98 (becoming the first former UConn player to do so). The Bulls renounced their rights on Jan. 25, 1999. He then signed a 1-year, $1 million contract with the NJ Nets on Feb. 3, 1999. He signed another 1-year contract, for $1.1 million, with the NJ Nets on August. 9, 1999.
On April 28 he had torn cartilage and loose particles removed from his left knee and ligament damage repaired on the fourth finger of his left hand at Beth Israel North Hospital in Manhattan. On May 17 he underwent surgery for the third time in three weeks yesterday when Dr. Michael Kelly, the team's orthopedist, performed arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to repair a torn lateral meniscus and remove loose particles. His left hand, which was repaired in April, was to remain immobilized for two more weeks (beginning of June), and he began a three-month rehabilitation on both knees and the hand immediately.
Was not signed prior to the start of the 2000-01 NBA season but his agent did have talks with both the Washington Wizards and the Charlotte Hornets (he still has a home in North Carolina from when he played for Charlotte). Signed by Charlotte for the remainder of the season on April 10th, 2001.
As of Sept. 26, 2001 he appeared ready to sign a one-year contract with the NY Knicks but then apparently turned down their offer to consider other options. Still hasn't signed with a team but works out regularly at the Charlotte Hornets pratice facility near where he lives. Subject of a good article in the NH Register by Dave Solomon (Jan. 25, 2002).
Signed on March 8, 2002 with the Fayetteville Patriots (NBDL) for the last 3 weeks (6 games) of their season. Stated that he was doing so to show the NBA teams that he was healthy with the hope that someone will sign him this season.
