
Married to Kelly Penwell, a former All-American basketball player at Hartford ('90-94), who was an assistant coach on Cleveland State's women's team when Donny was playing for the Cavaliers, and then was an assistant coach at Trinity College (CT) when Donny was playing for the CT Pride in 2001.
Was the Cleveland Cavaliers #2 draft pick (39th overall) in the second round of the 1995 NBA Draft. Also the #1 pick (7th overall) by the Connecticut Pride in the 1995 CBA Draft. Release by Cleveland on 10/30/97. Thought about joining the CT Pride, and then decided to look into playing in Italy but I don't think either ever happened.
Signed by the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 21, 1999. Place on the Injured Reserve list on Feb. 5, 1999. Placed back on the active roster by the Bucks on Feb. 17th only to be released on Feb. 18th. Played on the Toronto Raptors team in the Fila Pro Summer League in July 1999 and on a Seattle SuperSonics team in another summer league.
Signed with the CT Pride (CBA) on 10/29/99. Selected for the 1999-2000 CBA All-Star Team. Signed to a 10-day contract by the Cleveland Cavailiers (NBA) on 2/25/00. Subject of a good article on March 1st. Signed to a second 10-day contract on March 7th. Released on March 12th when Brevin Knight came off the injured reserve list.
Didn't return to the CT Pride, which then lost in the first round of the CBA playoffs to the Sioux Falls Skyforce (featuring Chris Smith). Did some pre-game and post-game commentary on WFSB Channel 3's broadcasts of the UConn Men's first and second round NCAA Tournament games.
Signed a one-year contract in Oct. 2000 to play in Greece for Near East but was released after just 3 games in Nov. 2000. Signed with CT Pride on Dec. 1, 2000.
Signed with the New Jersey Nets on Oct. 2, 2001. Released on October 25, 2001. Was one of the last 2 players cut from the roster.
Signed with the Kansas City Knights of the ABA2000 for the 2001-02 season.
Signed a 10-day contract with the New Jersey Nets (NBA) on Jan. 7th. Signed a second 10-day contract with the Nets on Jan. 17th. Signed for the remainder of the season on Jan. 28th.
